Cookies and local storage
Last updated 20 August 2026
Cogpit is deliberately light on storage. Nothing in the "analytics" or "advertising" categories is loaded or written until you say yes, and saying no is one click.
Strictly necessary (always on)
| Key | Type | Purpose | Lifetime |
|---|---|---|---|
| cogpit.agreed.v1 | Local storage | Remembers that you accepted the 18+ / moderation agreement so we do not ask on every chat | Until you clear your browser |
| cogpit.consent.v1 | Local storage | Remembers this cookie choice | 12 months |
| cogpit.devices | Local storage | Remembers which camera and microphone you picked, so you do not have to pick them again | Until you clear your browser |
| cogpit.auth | Local storage | Keeps you signed in to your account, if you made one. Signing out removes it | 30 days |
| cogpit.wallet | Local storage | Points at your purse of tokens. Without an account this is the only way back to them, so clearing it loses them | Until you clear your browser |
| cogpit.nudge | Local storage | When we last suggested making an account, so we do not ask again for a few days | Until you clear your browser |
| cogpit.gear | Local storage | Remembers whether you had the camera and microphone switched on last time | Until you clear your browser |
| cogpit.layout | Local storage | Remembers the view you chose in a call and where you parked your own picture | Until you clear your browser |
| cogpit.interests | Local storage | Remembers the interests you picked | Until you clear your browser |
| cogpit.pass | Local storage | Your Cogpit Pass, if you have one. It is the pass rather than a pointer to one, because there are no accounts, which is also why clearing it loses the pass. Only written when you redeem a code or pay | Until it expires or you clear your browser |
Cloudflare Turnstile (cf_chl_*) | Cookie / local storage set by challenges.cloudflare.com, only if the site is configured to use Turnstile | Checks that a person, not a bot, is pressing START. Turnstile does not profile you and is not used for advertising | Minutes, per challenge |
The bot check on START is either Cloudflare Turnstile or, by default, a small puzzle your own browser solves. The built-in puzzle stores nothing at all: no cookie, no local storage, no identifier; your browser simply does a moment of arithmetic and sends back the answer. Turnstile, when it is used, is the only third-party code this site loads and it loads only for that check. Either way it is strictly necessary: without it the service would be overrun by bots.
Analytics (off unless you accept)
Three counters, and nothing else: a chat started, which band the queue wait fell into (0-1 s, 1-2 s, 2-3 s and so on), and a report was made. Used to tell whether matching is fast enough. No profiling, no cross-site tracking, no advertising use.
What is stored is a number per day per counter. There is no row for you, no identifier, no session id and no time of day; the table has nowhere to put any of them, which is a stronger promise than one that relies on us not filling a column in. If you leave this switched off, your browser sends nothing at all: not an empty message, not a “no thanks” message. The server has no other way to find out, on purpose.
Advertising (off unless you accept)
There is an advertising slot beside the chat during a call. Today it carries our own offer and nothing else: no network is contacted, no script is loaded from anywhere, and nothing about you is read or sent, which is why it appears whatever you chose here. If we ever sell that slot to an advertising network, it will run only for people who switched this category on, and the network will be named in this table before it does. Cogpit Pass removes the slot entirely.
